Project Aprons

Week 4
I decided to do a week instead of days because mostly this week we did the same things as in, Sewing, cutting, measuring and questioning where to put things. As a group we decided working in pairs was going to be easier so we can help each other. The way we put groups together was the person who had the same fabric worked with the other person.

Project Aprons

12.08.16
Today Grace, Holly and I started cutting our fabric, the reason it was only Grace, Holly and I was because Awatea, Jacinda and Maya were doing master chef. When we started to prepare the fabric we had to fold it in half because we only had half a pattern.Pinning, cutting and measuring took quite a long time because we had to chalk 3 cm away from the pattern so we had seams. I only ended up sewing one side of my apron but Grace ended up sewing two sides!.

Project Aprons

10.08.16
Today we went shopping,in the afternoon though before we went to the mall this is what we did.We had to plan and measure again plus making sure we had all of the fabrics and prices all sorted out.

The group that ended up going shopping was 4/6 of us it was Jacinda, Grace, Awatea and I. After lunch we printed the piece of paper that had all the information that we needed on it and left. Here are
some pictures

9.08.16
Today we were just catching up on documenting to make sure we had put down everything we had done the past week and we also got told that tomorrow we were going shopping!yay. So we had to make a shopping list; as we were doing that we realised what happens if we can't find the fabric tat we already had surveyed for, so we went online to look at some fabrics. We added the fabrics from spotlight to the shopping list.

Project Aprons

8.08.16

Today we were deciding if we could have the designs we wanted and incorporate the designs we wanted as well so we did. As a group we also needed to decide how we were going to cut it.

Today as a group we were looking at finalising designs for the Aprons realising we might have to do different designs.

These were our designs that we/the whole class wanted to do.

Project Aprons

5.08.16
Today we started thinking of designs we could have so we decided to make a survey to ask everyone what designs we could do for the apron. It took quite a while to think of what to put on the survey;but the thing that took the longest was going around personally asking people to fill out the survey.
Here's a photo of me asking Jesse to fill out the form.

Project Aprons

Today we are working on budgets and how much money we needed so first we needed to finalize design's. To find the budget and how much money we need we need to finalize the designs on the aprons. It was a very long process deciding on the design's. Because there were so many different opinions it was hard to choose what design so we keep working on that. While some people were working on design's for the aprons Grace and I were working on a pattern for the apron then Holly and Maya started working on it with us. We decided that it would be more accurate to find a pattern online but a free one.we found a great one online and asked Elizabeth to print it out.We started making it out by seeing what it would look like and then taping it together.

Spins

26/06/16
Spins

On Thursday the 23rd of June, I went to my science spin once again but this time we weren't doing what we usually do in science, we were taught something new - a mind map tool. Before we started making a mind map though our teacher started briefing us on what we needed to do in our spin time, then we went on google classroom to make sure we were doing the right thing, after that we started making the mind map.

It was quite difficult for me to use it though, I had never used it
before but I got the hang of it after a while, however I had to think really hard of which questions I could answer. This is what I did during the whole spin session;

Technology

After floor time at the high school I went to my technology spin. During floor time I tried to look for my sketch-up design of the art gallery which I couldn't find anywhere so I quickly had to re-do it. I then went into my spin and carried on with it. I was going to put pictures up of the uninteresting objects we chose but then I decided to make them 3d which was quite hard. I am still figuring out how I am going to make the scissors. Now I know how to use sketch-up which might be helpful when I want to design something that might be too difficult to design on paper.

Science and Technology spins

16.06.16
Science spin

Today I went to my science spin and it was about Ratites.I found out in this spin that ratites aren't a single bird they a group of flightless birds. Then I filled out these questions.
What are ratites? What are some named examples of them? Where are they found in the world?
A ratite is any of a diverse group of large, flightless birds of the infraclass Palaeognathae. The systematics involved have been in flux.
What are common features of ratites?
Ratites are different from the flying birds in that they needed to adapt or evolve certain features to protect their young.

Why are ratites (mostly) flightless?
They have no keel on their sternum without this to anchor their wing muscles they could not fly even if the were to develop suitable wings

Case study - NZ ratite
For either the Moa or the Kiwi, carry out some further research to answer these questions:
What is the scientific/Latin name for your bird?
Apteryx (kiwi)
What is the timeframe for your bird? (When are they thought to have arrived in NZ? How have their numbers changed over time? Are they now endangered/extinct?)
They arrived in New Zealand around 39 million years ago and are still alive.

They have become endangered and recently humans have taken action.
How many different species of your bird existed)?
6
Do we know what kinds of foods they eat/ate?
Kiwis are omnivores. Their muscular stomach usually contains grit (like dirt) and small stones, to help in the digestion process.
Are there any special features or characteristics about your bird?
An average of 27 kiwis are killed by predators every week.So over time they will be gone from our mainland.
What is a predator to your species/what caused it to die out?
stoats, ferrets, weasels, rats, possums, cats and dogs
Whereabouts within NZ is/was the species of your bird found?
Brown Kiwis are found in forested areas in the North Island,Fiordland, South Westland and Stewart Island. And spotted kiwis are found up North in the South Island on offshore islands and forests.
Any further questions about your bird?
Was there any other kiwis before the ones now?

These are all of the answers I could find and there were extensions but I didn't have enough time so there is some follow up for it.

Technology spin

After the science spin Nicola, Jacinda and I went down to the library for floor time and started doing our follow-up work I did 4 maths buddy tasks and some other work too. After floor time had finished Jacinda and I went to our spin and then Bailey came too. We started on sketch up and had to do a replica of the Art Gallery break out space I wasn't there the week before that so I had a lot of work to catch up on but I got it done and nearly finished doing the finer details. Now I just have to do all of the furniture. The reason why we (Jacinda, Bailey and I) are making a replica is because for the last couple of weeks we have been making an uninteresting objects museum, so what we did was go around the school and take photos of uninteresting objects which was hard because we all had different opinions. Once we had finished taking the photos we started making a site and putting all of the photos on it and a description with it. So we are making a replica so we can make the Art Gallery a museum of uninteresting objects.
